What a whirlwind of excitement and learning the past few weeks have been! I’d like to introduce myself to My City Magazine’s loyal and valued readers, advertisers, subscribers and contributors.
My name is Sharon Stone and I live with my husband Jeff in Fenton Township. Prior to that, we lived in Downtown Flint for four years, as well as Lake Orion. We raised our three children in Fenton Township and they attended Lake Fenton Community Schools and Powers High School. We are now proud grandparents of three adorable grandchildren. I graduated from Michigan State with a bachelor of arts degree with an emphasis in graphic design. I still occasionally paint as a fun hobby when I have time.
I spent the last 20-plus years in the newspaper business and was editor of a Fenton newspaper for the last 12 years. I grew up with magazines and always looked forward to the latest issue when it arrived in the mail. I would browse through each one several times, always finding something I missed. Sometimes, you find out that your very own neighbors are doing something amazing.
In addition to working and raising our kids, our family also spends every spring preparing for our annual Brad Stone Summer Classic, in memory of our son, Brad, which we organize and host every year on Father’s Day weekend at Fenton Farms Golf Club. We just hosted our 25th anniversary event.
I am grateful for this opportunity that Vince Lorraine and Sherron Barden have put in my path, and I am committed to bringing you the very best coverage of Genesee County. As Vince and Sherron look forward to a new chapter in their lives after selling the magazine to Fast Traction Media owned by Laura Constable, I am soaking up all of their ideas and processes to continue bringing you the best magazine focused on interesting and talented individuals, organizations, schools and businesses in the Greater Flint area and Genesee County.
In this issue, you will find a wealth of information in our Education Section. Even though we are all basking in the August heat of a beautiful Michigan summer, school is right around the corner. I encourage you to read about the Warda Foundation Academy in Fenton, the Genesee County Landlords Association and an interview with Matt Cooper, who directs the culinary institute at Mott Community College.
While we are maintaining the magazine’s longtime coverage for the Greater Flint area, we have created a new feature highlighting a local restaurant each month. As someone who loves dining out, I am grateful for the variety of eateries all around us. We’re kicking off our new monthly “Eats” feature with
Mario’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, one of my favorite places for the past 40-plus years.
