A cup of Joe, java, mud, brew… whatever you want to call it, coffee lovers all around the world will be celebrating National Coffee Day, this Sunday, Sept. 29.  Also known as Coffee Day or International Coffee Day, it is a holiday that celebrates this popular beverage and the joy it brings to people all over the world. Coffee lovers not only take the time to enjoy their favorite brand of coffee, there are also many businesses that offer discounted or free cups of coffee to their customers.

There is still time to sign-up for, or donate to, Genesee County’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s taking place this Saturday (September 28) at 11 am at UM-Flint White Building Lawn. Registration can be done online or starting at 10:00 am on Saturday. Donations can be made online at act.alz.org.

It’s fall! The leaves are starting to change, the weather is cool. There is no better way to celebrate the season than taking the kids out for an afternoon at the apple orchard. Here are of few of My City’s favorites.

Hockey is Back! The Flint Firebirds home opener takes place this upcoming Saturday as our Flint Firebirds take on the Niagara IceDogs at Dort Federal Event Center at 7pm. The Firebirds are looking forward to a great season as they look to surpass their goal of home ice for the playoffs. Head down to Dort Federal Event Center and support the team throughout the season.

The Ties and Tails Gala is coming up this weekend! The highly anticipated event will take place this year at Signature Chop House in Flushing. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to help the animals at the Genesee County Humane Society (GCHS).

It’s finally here! The first day of fall. It’s time to bring out the cozy sweatshirts and sit back and enjoy the crisp cool weather the autumn equinox brings.

Summer is coming to an end and one of my favorite things to do at this time of year is make End of Summer Vegetable Beef Soup. I make one last trip to the farmers’ market or to a local farm stand where the last of the summer’s vegetables are still abundant. This soup, which is my own recipe, can be made with or without meat. I like to use Black Angus beef stew meat but you can substitute the beef with Cannoli beans and the beef stock with vegetable stock!

Genesee County is considering the addition of almost thirty more roundabouts at busy intersections throughout the area. In fact, a roundabout is coming to the city of Fenton as many of you probably know — at the intersection of Torrey and North roads. According to recent reports, the project is expected to be completed sometime in November. Many people are confused by roundabouts but according to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts are often safer, more efficient, less costly and more aesthetically appealing than conventional intersection designs.  Here are some guidelines to follow from the Michigan Department of Transportation when driving a roundabout:

Halo Burger, Flint’s coveted local burger chain is turning 96 years old on Wednesday, Sept. 18. To celebrate, the brand is offering their classic QP Burger for $1.96 from 2-7pm at all of their restaurants. Terry Thomas, son of founder Bill Thomas and Halo Burger’s CEO for many years, will be attending the festivities at the Linden Road restaurant from 3-5pm.

Something exciting is happening in the Flint River this weekend. On Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Mott Park Recreational Area from 1-3pm, the reintroduction of juvenile Lake Sturgeon into the Flint River will take place. Participants may have the opportunity to help with the release, according to a statement released by the Flint River Watershed Coalition.
