Spooky noises, bumping sounds. Dishes flying across the room. Do you believe in ghosts? There are several houses and establishments in Genesee County that are said to be haunted. According to 99wfmk.com/flint/phantoms Flint has its share of paranormal activity.

Since most of us can remember, Halloween has always been celebrated as a time of costumes, candy, thrills and ghost stories. It is something adults and children look forward to every year. When October begins, one of the first questions we ask our children is, “what do you want to be for Halloween?” while pondering our own macabre transformation.  It is a tradition that ranks with Thanksgiving and Christmas. But when you really think about it, it’s a very strange concept.  Why do we dress up just to scare the dickens out of each other? Why do we pass out sweets? How in the world did this thing start?

October 29 is National Cat Day and is the “purrfect” day to give extra attention to your feline friends. It is a day in which people take time to appreciate the common household cat — an animal that has been around humans for the past 12,000 years. It’s the time of year to show these felines some love and adoration.

From Jim Crow to CEO! A new book will debut on Wednesday, October 30 at the Mott Culinary Institute featuring the life of our very own Willie Artis, CEO of Genesee Packaging. Mr. Artis found Genesee Packaging in 1979 to provide packaging to the automotive industry and other product suppliers. The business employed nearly a thousand people and grew to become one of the most successful in Flint’s history.

This Wednesday, October 30 Genesee County is in for a holiday treat. The classic silent film, “Nosferatu”, will be screened at the Flint Institute of Music in MacArthur Hall. Music for the film will be performed by Andrew Roger of the Flint Organ Club!

It just isn’t Halloween unless you have watched the movie “Hocus Pocus” at least a dozen times!  It’s a classic Disney movie that the whole family loves watching. After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani and their new friend, Allison.  After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches, the Sanderson sisters, (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.

On Thursday, November 7, from 11:30-1 p.m. at the Genesys Banquet and Conference Center, the YWCA of Greater Flint will hold its major-fundraising event. The luncheon will feature keynote speaker Ilyasah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X. Shabazz is a staunch advocate for youth and woman empowerment and promotes higher education for at-risk youth.

With Halloween just around the corner, many families are carving pumpkins and making scary jack o lanterns. When you are scooping out the seeds, don’t toss them out! Today is the 20th annual “Lights On Afterschool” national rally. Lights On Afterschool is focused on drawing awareness to the importance of afterschool programs in local communities. Taking part in the national rally locally, YouthQuest is hosting 11 community events from tonight (Oct. 24) through Oct. 31.
