It’s a beautiful thing when birds choose your yard. Blue jays, mourning doves, cardinals—no matter the species, their presence signals that they find your space welcoming. It’s a place where they feel safe enough to thrive. The same can be said for people: to truly flourish, we need a cozy, supportive community. Fortunately, there’s a place in Grand Blanc that fosters that sense of belonging—for both birds and people. It’s a charming little shop called JJ Cardinal’s Wild Bird & Nature Store.
It’s October, the season of goblins, ghouls, and goodies. Michigan is no exception, as shown by these 16 events taking place throughout the month. Old or young, thrill-seeking or candy-chasing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Inside the warm and welcoming, mahogany-paneled confines of the Flint Industrial Savings Bank, the dapper bank executives gathered around an impressive mahogany table. Outside, the autumn winds were blowing through that October of 1929, and soon a seismic change across America—and the world—would arrive. But inside the conference room, the executives’ designer leather shoes remained as dry as their afternoon martinis, while the smiling visage of Chairman of the Board Charles Stewart Mott looked down from a portrait hung with care.
Michigan State receiver Omari Kelly’s face lit up when asked about his position coach, Courtney Hawkins, during this year’s spring practice. “I love coach Hawk, that’s my guy,” said Kelly, a first-team Conference USA standout who transferred from Middle Tennessee State following last season. “We have our serious moments, but a lot of times, we are just bonding and having a good time. Since he’s played at the highest level, he can chime in on things he has seen and experienced and that puts things in better perspective for me.”
If you’re spending big bucks on subscriptions for your family’s entertainment, you’re not alone.
