Every shelter animal has a story … Let’s change their ending.

Since April 1963, families and friends across Flint, Genesee County and beyond have been enjoying homemade Italian dishes at Mario’s Restaurant & Pizzeria in Flint. Thea restaurant is named after Mario Simoni, an Italian immigrant who opened the restaurant. After owning and running the popular eatery for 59 years, brothers Frank and Sergio Simoni sold the business in 2022 to Tim and Lori Lanphear.

This month, the streets of Flint won’t just be filled with chrome and horsepower – a legend will grace them. For the first time, the world’s only fan-built, full-scale replica of Optimus Prime from “Transformers: Age of Extinction” will roll into Downtown Flint for the Back to the Bricks 21st Annual Main Event.

The “big idea” started in 1923 with physical education instructor Wilbur P. Bowen. In his class was a young man named Frank Manley, who absorbed every single word and philosophy that Bowen put forth. Chiefly among those ideas was the notion that athletics was such an enormous social good, that it was a key to living a quality life and paramount to the good of the community. Bowen even laid out the plan that would have to be in place to properly implement that in a community. He said that the cornerstone was the notion that all community facilities be made available for recreational activities and sports.

This 5½-year-old Great Dane has been patiently waiting for his forever home since November 2023. True to his breed’s nickname, Bear is the definition of a “gentle giant.” He’s calm, affectionate, and one of our volunteers’ favorite walking companions.
