Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States, affecting approximately 15 million Americans and 170 million people worldwide. At the present time, this neurodegenerative disease has no cure. There are several risk factors that are associated with the disease:

For decades, a mammogram was a woman’s only choice for breast cancer screening. However, after seven years of tedious research, a local doctor, David A. Strahle, MD has perfected an alternate screening method – specifically for women who have dense breast tissue.

Genesys was the nation’s first hospital and pharmacy to receive the new Medication Compounding Certification from The Joint Commission (TJC). This newly created certification assures safe IV medication for patients and follows national standards for sterile compounding. Back in February when the survey occurred, TJC surveyors reported that the Genesys Pharmacy set the bar very high for the rest of pharmacies nationwide. Being chosen first and meeting TJC expectations is a great point of pride for the Genesys pharmacy team who has worked diligently for the past several years to assure the best sterile medication compounding practices are followed.
The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association awarded Genesys with the “Get with the Guidelines” Stroke Gold Plus achievement award and the Target: Stroke Honor Roll award for its excellent process improvement efforts in treating stroke patients. Hospitals receiving the Gold Plus achievement award have reached an aggressive goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care for 24 consecutive months.

Genesys Health System is teaming up with the Grand Blanc Fire Department to offer monthly car seat inspection stations. Starting Wednesday, October 11 from 4-7PM, parents can stop by the Grand Blanc Fire Department, located at 117 High St., for a car seat safety check.
Binesh Patel, MD has been named Chief Medical Officer of McLaren Flint. He began the position in June.
In July, Hurley Medical Center celebrated the success of the “Panda Warmer Project” for its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). My City was there to capture the heartwarming occasion featuring a pup, a panda cake, and newborn twins!

McLaren Family Residency Center is pleased to welcome board-certified family and sports medicine physician, Hussein Saghir, DO, CAQSM, to its practice. Dr. Saghir completed a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine through Wayne State University School of Medicine at Detroit Medical Center and a residency in family medicine at Genesys Regional Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
