In late March, the City of Flint began demolishing the Hamilton Dam, located next to the campus of UM-Flint. The effort, which kept the demo crew busy for several days, is part of the larger Flint River Restoration Project. The removal of the 218-foot concrete dam was made possible by a grant awarded to Genesee County Parks in 2017 by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Dam Management.

Not many businesses can say they’ve endured more than a century, but W.J. Phillips Insurance Agency in Flint Township has been in business for 101 years and is now run by a fourth generation of family members. Stephen Phillips currently owns the agency started by his grandfather, William J. Phillips. “We are the oldest family-owned Auto Owners Insurance agency in the country!” he exclaims.
May 6 is National Nurses Day, the first day of National Nurses Week, which ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Nightingale became known as the founder of professional nursing for her pioneering work during the Crimean War. National Nurses Week was first observed in October 1954, the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s mission to Crimea. She became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” due to her habit of making nightly rounds by lantern light.
Never ones to shy away from their beliefs, Flint hardcore punk group, Braidedveins, released a statement immediately following the 2016 election that began with those words. “Don’t allow the monstrous and cruel to become normal. Interrupt and resist violence and domination. Interrupt and resist the logics of violence and domination,” the statement goes on to say. It was at this point when the band decided that all proceeds made from their music would be donated to various progressive social movements, the first of which was Black Lives Matter.
The Honorable Celeste Bell was appointed to the bench of the Genesee County 7th Circuit Court by Gov. Rick Snyder to replace retiring Judge, Archie Hayman. Humble and down-to-earth, she came to the position highly recommended by the legal community. Additionally, the newly appointed judge brings extensive knowledge and experience with her. She previously served in the Genesee County Office of Corporation Counsel as the Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney of the Civil Division, serving as legal advisor to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners and all County departments, and acted on behalf of the County on civil matters.
Located on Fenton Road, on Flint’s south side, is Krystal Jo’s Diner – a little place well known for its down-home atmosphere, juicy burgers and fresh-cut fries. Owner Tony Tucker named the place after his wife, Krystal Jo. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the little diner has become a community hangout where everybody knows everybody.
