In 1939, Charles Stewart Mott realized that there would be children in Genesee County whose parents may not be able to afford health care, and believed that no child should go without it. He set up a clinic for children in the middle of Hurley Hospital that would soon outgrow the confines of that facility and in 1962, a new building was constructed at 806 Tuuri Place, its current location.

Nearly 3,000 years ago, Egyptian scholars chronicled a rare disease characterized by an excess of urine production. Then, around 113 AD, Aretaeus of Cappadocia described the same symptoms and gave the condition the name “diabetes.” The term, roughly translated, means “to pass through” referencing the act of passing urine through the system. The term “mellitus” (meaning “honey sweet”) was coined in 1675 by Thomas Willis after rediscovering the sweetness of urine (the first discovery of this symptom was chronicled by Indian physician, Sushruta, in 7th century BC.) In 1776, physician Matthew Dobson demonstrated that the sweetness was due to the presence of sugar.

When McLaren General Hospital opened in October 1951, it was named in her honor, making it the first hospital in the country to be named after a nurse. This year, the hospital is celebrating 100 years of caring for patients.

A hospital is a very “adult world,” and it can be a scary place, especially for kids, according to Laura Parcels, Director of Child Life Services at Hurley Medical Center. And Hurley has a program designed to help kids cope with being in a hospital setting. The Child Life program can ease their fears and put a dose of “normal” back into a young life disrupted by an illness, injury or disability.

However, people can and do recover. It is estimated that as many as 20 million individuals and family members are living lives in recovery from alcohol use.

Tom started drinking at a very young age. “When my brother smoked, I would smoke a cigarette and when he drank, I wanted to drink,” he says. Tom was drunk for the first time at 16 years old. “I got drunk with a friend on a bottle of wine,” he remembers. “I had trouble with alcohol from the get-go.”
