The growing arts scene in Downtown Flint has another boost with the opening of the world-class Mott-Warsh Collection. Co-Founded by Maryanne Mott, the new gallery will feature works by artists of the African diaspora. The Mott-Warsh Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday, 11am to 6pm and Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. The gallery will be open until 9pm on the second Friday of each month for Flint ArtWalk. It is located on the corner of S. Saginaw Street and E. Court Street (entrance). At Buckham Gallery, the exhibition, “Solar Intensity” features artists: Kenneth Hakala, Craig Hinshaw, Mary Beth Koszut, and Bernd Miesing. The show runs from June 10 to July 2. The gallery is located at 134 ½ Second Street, and is open Thursday through Saturday, 12pm to 5:30pm.

Next month, the Flint Institute of Arts will begin construction on the Contemporary Craft Wing and artist’s makerspace as part of a significant museum expansion and renovation of its Art School. The completion is scheduled for autumn of 2017.

On a blustery, spring day, Ashoka Rao holds back her hair as she talks about the purpose of rhythm in classical Indian dancing. “It’s a perspective,” she tells me. “With certain dances, the rhythm is different. Like with this wind,” as it lifts the corners of the paper dance recital program on the table. “Today, this wind is a mad dance of nature. But other times, wind can be peaceful.”

johndempsey-6Right in the heart of the Downtown Flint art scene, painter John Dempsey has been maintaining a studio for over 25 years, working with the Buckham Fine Arts Project, and exhibiting his work at the Flint Institute of Arts, and many other locations.

Genesee District Library and Flint Public Library present the 2nd Annual UM-Flint Student Spoken Word Performance. As part of their final project, 16 students from the University of Michigan-Flint will perform at the Flint Public Library on Wednesday, April 13 from 5pm to 6:45pm. The performance is part of Dr. Traci Currie’s class, “Spoken Word as Art and Communication.”

Something very exciting and unique is happening at Mott Middle College in Flint. Two passionate teachers had a simultaneous epiphany that led to the formation of a puppet-making class at the school, and the creation of Fly-Town Puppet Theatre. Mott Middle College is a non-traditional high school, operated by the Genesee Intermediate School District. It opened in 1991 on the campus of Mott Community College and specializes in overlapping an Associate’s Degree with a general education high school diploma.

The Art School Lego® Competition is a day of events celebrating the creativity of Lego enthusiasts. Winners are displayed in Isabel Hall, based on children from grades K-12 have submitted an original Lego sculpture. Art School scholarships, gift cards, and Lego kits are presented to those who place in the following categories: most creative, most technically challenging, people’s choice and honorable mention.

luminist-6Trenton Odette and Larissa Cain are creative, entrepreneurial artists who make unique, custom Michigan-themed pieces of artwork using ceramic, wire and stone. You may have seen them and their work at the Flint Handmade Valentine’s Day Mini-Market event at the Flint Farmers’ Market Atrium last month. “We use a unique glazing technique,” says Trenton. “It’s a process which involves adding recycled glass.”

Celtic Nights, Ireland’s acclaimed showcase ensemble for music and dance, is returning for a coast-to-coast tour of North America. The “Spirit of Freedom” tour will be visiting The Whiting on Sunday, February 21 at 7:30pm. The tour is a celebration of the centennial of the event that gave birth to modern Ireland – the Easter Rising of 1916.
