Alex Eaton, Linden High School, Grade 12April Student Standout

Alex Eaton is a senior at Linden High School. He was named a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist last September and, in late February, was named a National Merit Scholar Finalist.

What does this accomplishment mean to you?

It’s an honor to represent LHS as a National Merit Finalist this year. I was elated when I found out and see it as a continuation of my academic drive and dedication. I’m excited to see where it will lead and hope to be named a scholarship recipient this May.

What are your favorite classes?

My favorite class this year is, by far, AP Biology with Mr. Landrem.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in?

I’m a co-captain of the LHS Varsity Quiz Bowl and Bowling teams. I’ve participated in both since my freshman year and am excited to see how my senior seasons end. The bowling season ends this Friday, and it has been very fun and rewarding.

Our Quiz Bowl team is 92–0 in league play since October 2023 and will be heading to Michigan State for the state tournament this April. With the team’s combined strengths, I have no doubt we will find success.

Who’s your favorite teacher, and why?

This is a tough question. I’ve known my Quiz Bowl coach and sophomore-year Honors British Literature teacher, Mr. Schneider, since I was in eighth grade. He pushed me to become a better writer, nurtured my development as a leader, and has helped me pursue my interests. Looking back at my four years of high school, I have fond memories of playing Quiz Bowl review games and hearing “Happy Birthday” sung on tabletops.

Have you chosen a college to attend next year?

I plan to attend the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. I plan to study civil engineering and hope to find a career that blends my interests in infrastructure and the environment.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself working hard on projects in my community. I hope to have returned to school by then to pursue an MBA.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy trivia and going to the Rough Draught in Fenton for trivia night. I also spend a lot of time watching Big Brother and Survivor, as well as spending time with friends and family.

Any advice for younger students?

Be yourself and have fun. Try to find something you’re passionate about and stick with it. For me, that passion came from academics. I believe trying your hardest is the best way to keep your options open after high school.
