Meet
Karma
She is a sweet old lady
Meet Karma, an approximately 8-year-old cat who may be a little older. This sweet old lady loves her canned food every day and enjoys a good nap. Her adoption fee is just $25.
If you’re considering adopting an older cat, don’t let her age discourage you. An 8-year-old cat is generally considered a mature adult, not extremely old. Many cats live well into their mid-to-late teens, and some reach their 20s.
Her Personality Is Probably Already Established
One of the biggest advantages of adopting an older cat is that her personality is generally well established. You have a better idea of whether she is:
- Affectionate or independent
- A lap cat or more of a “sit beside you” cat
- Quiet or talkative
- Comfortable with other animals
- Playful or more laid-back
She May Bond Deeply With You
Older cats can form wonderful attachments with their people. Don’t be surprised if an older cat becomes very affectionate once she feels safe and comfortable in her new home, particularly if she has experienced a major change or lost a previous home.
Give her time to adjust. Some older cats settle in within days, while others may need several weeks to feel completely comfortable.
Veterinary Care Becomes More Important
For a cat who is 8 or older, it’s a good idea to have a veterinarian establish a health baseline. Regular veterinary care may include:
- An annual physical examination
- Dental examinations
- Vaccinations appropriate to her lifestyle
- Weight monitoring
- Blood pressure screening
- Periodic bloodwork, particularly as she gets older
- Kidney and thyroid monitoring as she ages
Cats are very good at hiding signs of illness, so subtle changes in behavior, appetite, weight or litter-box habits can be important.
Other Things to Consider
Pay attention to her teeth.
Monitor kidney health.
Watch her weight.
Pay attention to litter-box habits.
Make your home comfortable.
She Doesn’t Need to Be Treated Like an “Old” Cat
An 8-year-old cat can still have plenty of playful, happy and healthy years ahead. What matters most is her individual health, personality and quality of life.
And for Karma, what she may need most is a loving home, a comfortable place to nap and someone who appreciates what a sweet older cat can bring to their life.
Karma’s adoption fee is $25. Could you be the person who gives this sweet old lady her second chance?
