Meet
Val

She loves toys and needs a good home with no dogs

This is Val! She is approximately 3½ years old, and her adoption fee is $125. She has been at the Humane Society of Genesee County (HSGC) since January 5. She was brought to the shelter because of a housing issue.

Val loves toys, is partially house trained and needs a home with no other dogs.

Since HSGC says Val needs to be in a home without other dogs, potential adopters should take that recommendation seriously. However, this does not necessarily mean Val is a difficult or bad dog. It may simply mean she needs to be your one-and-only dog.

Are you comfortable making her your only dog for the rest of her life? If so, don’t necessarily consider being dog-free a negative. Some dogs are perfectly happy being the center of their family’s world. She doesn’t need to go to dog parks, play with neighborhood dogs or have a canine sibling to have a wonderful life. What matters is that she gets exercise, companionship, affection, mental stimulation and a predictable home.

Don’t adopt her thinking, “Once she knows how much we love her, she’ll learn to like other dogs.” Maybe she would improve, but that’s not an assumption to make. Adopt her because you’re happy to give her a home where she doesn’t have to live with other dogs.

And if you have grandchildren who visit, that’s something to discuss with the shelter volunteers. Being unable to live with another dog is very different from having problems with children, so be sure to ask how Val does around kids.

Everyone has roots. Traditions, communities and families connect us to time, place and one another. They stabilize us and offer comfort. Autumn reminds us of this every year through sweet treats, warm drinks and looking inward toward one another as the world seems to slow down. Almar Orchards is much the same. From its organic
