This is Louie! He is a 5-year-old Flemish Giant Mix. He weighs approximately 8 pounds. He will be neutered before he is adopted. He loves snacks and likes to hop around.
Adopting a 5-year-old Flemish Giant mix can be a wonderful decision, especially if you’re looking for a calm, established companion. At 5 years old, the rabbit is considered a mature adult. Flemish Giants often live 8-10 years, and some reach 12 years with excellent care, so you could still have several happy years together.
Flemish Giants are often called the “gentle giants” of the rabbit world. They tend to be:
- Calm and laid-back
- Affectionate once they trust you
- Intelligent and capable of learning routines
- Less hyperactive than many smaller breeds
At 5 years old, the rabbit’s personality is already established, so the rescue or current owner should be able to tell you whether it’s cuddly, independent, shy or outgoing.
Diet — the basics are simple:
- Unlimited timothy or other grass hay
- Fresh water at all times
- Measured rabbit pellets
- Daily leafy greens such as romaine, cilantro, parsley, bok choy and green leaf lettuce
- Fruit only as an occasional treat
Hay should make up the vast majority of the diet because it keeps the digestive system moving and helps wear down continuously growing teeth.
Exercise
Even older rabbits need several hours each day outside their enclosure to explore and exercise. Many enjoy tunnels, cardboard boxes and simple toys.
Compatibility
If you already have dogs or cats, introductions should be slow and supervised. Many rabbits coexist peacefully with calm pets, but safety always comes first.
Grooming
If the rabbit has a dense coat:
- Brush weekly.
- Brush more often during shedding seasons.
- Check nails regularly.
Veterinary care
Finding an exotic-animal veterinarian experienced with rabbits before you need one is a good idea.
