The Greater Flint area’s abundance of successful men and women is the perfect inspiration for this year’s “Ten to Toast,” a celebration of individuals who embody the region’s spirit of resilience and achievement. With deep roots in industry, reinvention, and community strength, the county has long nurtured a culture where grit, determination, and creativity flourish. Local schools, colleges, and workforce programs provide accessible pathways for residents to build skills, explore careers, and develop strong leadership qualities.
A vibrant network of community groups, mentors, and local initiatives helps fuel ambition while ensuring people feel supported as they pursue their goals. The county’s diverse economy—spanning healthcare, skilled trades, education, entrepreneurship, public service, and nonprofit work—gives individuals the freedom to find their passion and succeed.
Above all, Genesee County’s tradition of giving back creates a cycle of encouragement and opportunity. As we honor this year’s “Ten to Toast,” we celebrate both the exceptional achievers and the community that helps them rise.

Courtney Feril, Source Salon
2336 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc, MI | @sourcesalon
When I first entered cosmetology, I never imagined opening my own business. I simply wanted to work alongside my coworkers while having time for myself and my kids. Over time, though, I felt a pull to follow in my parents’ footsteps and create something that would benefit not only my family but also my team in meaningful, positive ways.
I believe staying up to date in all aspects of the beauty industry—fashion, cosmetics, health, and hair—helps you stay youthful. How you look and feel are deeply connected. Clients trust us to keep them feeling their best, and we take that seriously. We host classes, bring in educators, and partner with distributors who offer ongoing education. Our team attends hair shows together to stay inspired and on trend.
When building my brand and culture, I envisioned a team rooted in standards, structure, and mutual respect. I was fortunate to handpick men and women I had worked with for years, along with a new generation of talent eager to learn and grow. I’m incredibly proud of the team we’ve built.
The new year always inspires people to better themselves. I encourage everyone to try new things and embrace self-care. In 2026, treat yourself and be brave.
Looking ahead, investing in my staff remains one of my highest priorities. I am nothing without them. Their success is my success. I want to provide resources that help each stylist grow, stay motivated, and set themselves up for a strong future.
One of our most popular services right now is blowouts. A blowout is more than a wash and dry—it’s an experience. It includes cleansing, hydrating, and finishing the hair in a bouncy, luxurious style that leaves clients glowing.
There is no “typical” day in the salon. Every day is new and ever-changing. I’m constantly bringing in supplies and starting the morning with good vibes. My assistant, Addi Asperger, and our front desk manager, Christine Feick, keep my day organized and flowing. We mix color, wrap highlights, cut, blow-dry, clean, and do laundry. It’s beautiful chaos.
My proudest achievement is seeing my family become part of the salon community. My mom, Stacey Childs, helped design the space in every detail, my dad, Steve Childs, keeps things working, and my husband, CJ Feril, helps whenever he can.
Toast-worthy Interior Designer
Michelle Robins, Linden Kitchen & Bath
1002 N. Bridge St., Linden, MI | lindenkitchenandbath.com
Our company’s journey is deeply rooted in family. It began with my grandfather, whose dedication and craftsmanship laid the foundation. Ownership then passed to my parents, who carried forward his values of integrity and service. Today, under my leadership, we’ve entered an exciting new chapter. As we get ready to celebrate 80 years, we’ve expanded our vision by bringing in a talented design staff—Justin Farrington, Rob Stafford, Carol Herrick, and Catrina Burnori—ensuring we not only build beautiful kitchens and baths but also provide clients with inspired ideas and personalized solutions.
A defining moment came in the fall of 2013, when a vehicle drove through the front of our building. While unexpected, it gave us the chance to rethink our space. We upgraded the exterior and refreshed the interior with new kitchen vignette displays that now showcase our products and design concepts, giving clients a tangible sense of what’s possible in their homes. We continue to update the showroom regularly with new displays. What began as a family legacy has grown into a forward-thinking design company—still grounded in the values of our past but always looking ahead.
We’re proud to have earned the Houzz award 11 times, but what excites us most is bringing that level of design excellence to each project. A recent favorite is a Grand Blanc renovation where we transformed an outdated Tuscan-style kitchen into a bright, timeless space. We paired soft white cabinetry with a bold Titan Blue island from one of our custom cabinet lines, added warm walnut floating shelves, and highlighted the room with graceful archways. Champagne bronze finishes tied everything together, creating a kitchen that feels both elegant and inviting. The clients were thrilled—not just with the beauty of the design, but with how it reflected their family’s personality and created a space they can enjoy for years to come. That balance of timeless craftsmanship and fresh innovation defines our style.
What has kept our company strong for eight decades is a commitment to values that never fade: integrity, craftsmanship, and genuine care for people. From the beginning, our family believed that every project was part of someone’s life story. That belief continues today, guiding us as we listen closely, build with quality, and treat every client like extended family.
Toast-worthy Financial Advisor
Brice Carter, Financial Strategies Group
265 N. Alloy Dr., Fenton, MI | fsgmichigan.com
For more than a decade, Brice Carter, CFP, ChFC, CIMA, CAP, CDAA, MSFS, has been at the strategic helm of
Financial Strategies Group (FSG), the family run, SEC-registered advisory firm with offices in Okemos and Fenton. Since joining FSG in 2011, Carter has served as both Financial Advisor and Chief Investment Officer, shaping the firm’s investment philosophy, portfolio management, and long-term planning for a steadily expanding client base.
Thoughtful and grounded in both professional rigor and personal values, Carter reflects on the past year, the future of wealth management, and the clients who continue to inspire him.
If Carter could send a message to his January 1st self, it wouldn’t concern markets or strategy. “The year goes fast,” he says. “Your kids are growing like weeds, so enjoy every moment.” Even for someone steeped in long-term planning, he notes, some of the most valuable investments are made outside the office.
Asked about his most inspiring client, Carter shares the story of someone who has lost most of their vision and faces several other serious health challenges—yet lives with extraordinary optimism. They continue mentoring children, volunteering, and donating to those in need. Their resilience, he says, is a reminder that wealth is ultimately a tool for impact, not just security.
A misconception Carter hopes to dispel in 2026 is the idea that retirees must invest conservatively. “Retirement is just the beginning of another phase of life,” he explains. “For many people, it lasts 30 years or more. You have to keep your funds growing to keep pace with inflation.”
As for the economy, Carter expects more interest-rate cuts than currently anticipated—potentially triggering a wave of mortgage refinances and a renewed growth cycle in residential real estate.
Looking ahead to 2026, Carter is enthusiastic about a trend reshaping the advisory landscape: rising demand for fully independent fiduciary advisors. “Clients are increasingly searching for fiduciary advisors,” he says. “At FSG we are, of course, fiduciaries, and we love that consumers are becoming more aware of the benefits of working with independent firms.” To him, the shift signals a broader movement toward transparency and client-first planning.
Toast-worthy Benefits Package Specialist
Harvey Lee, Total Benefit Systems
5151 Gateway Centre Blvd. # 200, Flint, MI | totalbenefitsystems.com
When we entered the health insurance market in 1997, we quickly realized that rates are standardized and filed with the State—meaning price alone wouldn’t set Total Benefit Systems apart. From the beginning, our vision was to differentiate ourselves through exceptional service for both employers and their employees. Every client receives a dedicated Customer Service Representative, and unlike many competitors, we never outsource our support. This commitment has fueled our growth and earned us remarkable loyalty, including countless referrals from satisfied clients and their employees.
To stay ahead of constantly evolving health insurance regulations and plan options, our entire team participates in ongoing education, often through programs offered by our carrier partners. Health care rules and products change every year, and we believe it is our responsibility to stay informed so we can provide accurate, timely guidance. We also share important updates through a monthly electronic newsletter, ensuring clients always have the latest information at their fingertips.
In recent years, the insurance industry has seen a wave of acquisitions by private equity firms and publicly traded companies. These buyouts often lead to reduced service as support staff is consolidated or cut. By remaining family owned and locally operated, we maintain the high level of personalized attention our clients deserve. Every member of our team lives in Genesee County and is involved in the community, giving us a deep understanding of—and genuine care for—the needs of our neighbors.
Rising health care costs continue to challenge employers, driven by an aging population, increased demand for services, and costly new medications. Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, our focus is to help clients manage these pressures through cost-saving strategies and proactive communication. We hold in-person meetings to review plan or carrier changes and offer personalized employee meetings—or even custom YouTube videos—to ensure benefits are explained clearly and effectively.
Born and raised in Genesee County, I deeply value this community and the people who make it special. Many of our clients share our family owned business values, and we are proud to partner with the county’s many nonprofit organizations. Their dedication inspires all of us at Total Benefit Systems every day.
Toast-worthy Signage Consultant
Dan Crannie, Signs by Crannie
4145 Market Pl., Flint, MI | signsbycrannie.com
Signs by Crannie began as a one-man local sign shop. For the first decade or so, SBC grew organically, but as our customer base expanded, I realized our talent and capabilities reached far beyond those of a small local shop. After attending several trade-association meetings, it became clear that we had the potential to be a regional—and even national—player. Since then, we’ve continued to grow alongside the needs of clients of all sizes.
SBC specializes in everything from vehicle wraps to LED electronic message centers. Staying current with the latest technology is essential for tackling the most challenging projects. One of our most demanding jobs was the Godfrey Hotel in downtown Chicago—a 32-foot projecting custom canopy seamlessly connected to a 30-foot vertical blade sign, all installed in minus 15-degree temperatures. My team was incredible!
Many sign companies offer design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance, but few deliver them with our level of precision. Our team of true professionals makes me look good with their skill, commitment, and craftsmanship.
We’re proud to have created many notable works of functional art throughout the community, including the arches in Frankenmuth, Grand Blanc, and Lake Fenton; the new Genesee County building; and the Capitol Theatre. For me, it’s hard to choose a favorite, but I smile every time I notice the Flint Vehicle City Sign featured in hotel rooms, restaurants, stores, magazines, and even news intros.
We’re always looking to the future by utilizing technology. Some of the newest innovations in the sign world involve subtle advancements in materials and ever-increasing resolutions in digital printing and LED displays.
Finally, I’d like to salute all of my team members for pulling together this past year while I was recovering from open-heart surgery. They kept business running smoothly so I could focus on healing. I am truly blessed to have each and every one of them.
Toast-worthy Chiropractor
Dr. James Ide, Painless Chiropractic & Neuropathy Treatment Center
404 Rounds Dr., Fenton, MI | painlessdc.com
When a new patient walks through our doors, our first priority is understanding everything they’re experiencing—how their symptoms progress, what relieves them, what aggravates them, and, most importantly, what their personal goals are. We want to understand where they are and where they want to be so we can help them get there.
We begin with a comprehensive consultation followed by a thorough orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic examination, a stress test, and all necessary X-rays. Using these X-rays, we conduct a detailed motion study analysis to evaluate nerve pressure and determine whether each spinal joint is moving as it should. We then perform a full-body posture assessment to identify any improper weight distribution affecting the discs and nerves. This process gives us a complete picture of why a patient is struggling.
From there, we design a customized corrective care plan that is strategic, measurable, and built around long-term healing—not temporary relief. No other clinic structures care plans with the level of detail and precision that we do.
People today are becoming more proactive, more health-conscious, and more aware of the interconnectedness of the body. I believe chiropractic care is becoming a first line of defense in preventative health, helping families avoid unnecessary surgeries and medications that may create more problems than they solve.
I’m raising a glass to momentum. As we often tell our patients, motion is life—and as a practice, we have no intention of slowing down. We will continue investing in the most advanced, research-backed technologies and protocols to help people heal and regain their quality of life.
Personally, that same philosophy guides my own life. I’m committed to putting in the time, effort, and research necessary to stay as healthy as I can be. Health and happiness aren’t accidental; they’re shaped by daily choices. I’m excited for a year filled with growth, innovation, and continued dedication to the people we serve.
And I’m incredibly grateful for the amazing team we have. They support our patients wholeheartedly—and support one another just as strongly. That unity is a big part of what makes our clinic so special.
Toast-worthy Custom Home Builder
Jeffrey D. Wedding, Lake & Land Custom Homes
111 N. Leroy St., Fenton MI | lakeandlandhomes.com
When we talk about total commitment, quality workmanship, high standards, reliability, and integrity, we’re not repeating slogans—we’re describing the values that have defined our work and reputation for years. Our handshake pledge is more than a promise; it’s reassurance that our clients are partnering with a builder who genuinely cares. Many tell us they can feel the difference long before the first nail is driven because quality isn’t something we check at the end—it’s built into every stage.
At Lake & Land Custom Homes, we’re invested in the community we call home. We work with skilled, vetted tradespeople and trusted local suppliers, supporting the regional economy while delivering craftsmanship we’re proud to stand behind. Clients receive clear schedules, honest updates, and the accountability that has become our hallmark. When we say something will happen, it does—no hidden costs, no spin, no shortcuts. Just transparent pricing, documented changes, and straightforward communication from start to finish.
We go the extra mile because our clients—and our community—deserve it. Recently, a homeowner envisioned a custom lakefront retreat that captured the views while offering luxury and long-term durability. To bring that vision to life, we incorporated custom cabinetry, high-performance windows, advanced HVAC systems, metal roofing accents, and composite sidings and stone veneers built to withstand Michigan’s winters. Building near water brings unique challenges, so we engineered a reinforced foundation with deeper concrete grade beams and helical piers to ensure lasting stability. Projects like this aren’t just about building homes—they’re about raising the bar for construction quality in our region.
A client once said, “I would never have known you had another house going,” and it remains one of the greatest compliments we’ve received. It reflects our belief that every homeowner deserves unmatched focus and respect.
For anyone considering a dream home, my advice is simple: before budgets or floor plans, get clear about why you want to build. Purpose guides every decision that follows.
Looking ahead, we expect a shift toward homes rich with personality and deeply connected to nature—spaces that blend indoors and outdoors, embrace natural light, and adapt to evolving needs through smart-home technology and energy-efficient design.
At Lake & Land Custom Homes, we’re proud to help shape not only homes, but the future of our community—one thoughtful, enduring project at a time.
Toast-worthy Automotive Dealer
Matt Serra, Al Serra Auto Plaza
6061 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc, MI | alserra.com
Looking back to the beginning of my career, what ultimately drew me into the car business wasn’t the industry itself — it was the people. I watched my dad and grandfather build a company rooted in relationships, trust, and an unwavering commitment to taking care of customers and associates. That environment makes a lasting impression. As I got older, I realized the dealership business is really a leadership business. It rewards hard work, clear thinking, and the ability to develop great people. I also loved the idea of being part of something generational — honoring what came before me while building something even stronger for the future.
In an industry dominated by large public groups, our greatest advantage is that we’re built for relationships, not quarterly earnings calls. Being privately owned gives us the freedom to think long term — to invest in our people, reinvest in our communities, and make decisions that prioritize trust over transactions. Because we were born here in Michigan, we understand our customers, their expectations, and the pride people have in their hometown stores. That local insight matters. It shapes how we hire, how we serve, and how we build partnerships.
Al Serra has a long reputation for giving back, and I’m proud of that. My grandfather and father believed that if a community supports your business, you have a responsibility to support the community in return. That mindset has guided every generation since. I’m especially proud of our long-standing partnerships with local schools, youth sports, and organizations that strengthen families. I’m equally proud of how our stores rally behind local causes. Each dealership has the autonomy to support what matters most in its own neighborhood, and our teams take that responsibility seriously.
As we begin a new year, I’m excited to say we’re growing — adding new locations, expanding partnerships, and continuing to invest in Michigan and beyond. Technology is also transforming the industry, making the customer experience faster, simpler, and more transparent. Those things matter. But the real excitement comes from our people. We have incredible leaders across our organization, and we’re investing heavily in developing the next generation. The future of Al Serra and Serra Automotive isn’t just more stores — it’s more great people running great businesses with clarity, discipline, and heart.
Toast-worthy Attorney
Craig Fiederlein, CF Legal
302 E. Court St., Flint, MI | cflegal.net
My interest in law began early, inspired by watching my uncle manage apartment buildings in the Bronx. Seeing the challenges of property ownership sparked my interest in real estate. Later, studying finance and accounting at Michigan State University laid the foundation for my estate planning, business, and real estate law practice. Estate planning became a passion once I saw how easily families could fall into conflict without proper planning. It’s rewarding to help clients gain clarity, prevent disputes, and feel secure about their future.
Practicing in this region for nearly 30 years has shaped both my approach and the development of our firm, CFLEGAL, PC (formerly Christenson & Fiederlein, PC). Our main office is in downtown Flint, close to the courthouse, giving us an ideal hub for handling real estate, probate, business, and civil litigation. We also maintain a satellite office in Grand Blanc.
Our firm includes three attorneys: Rick Hetherington, who handles criminal defense, real estate matters, and family law; Austin Church, our associate and legal writer who manages litigation, landlord work, and complex court matters; and me, with nearly three decades of experience in real estate, probate, business, and estate planning. Our former partner, Chris Christenson, now serves as a judge in the region—something we are proud of and consider part of our firm’s heritage.
As for current trends, long-term care costs continue to rise, making asset protection and Medicaid planning increasingly important for families. More people are planning earlier to avoid crisis-driven decisions. In real estate, title defects, land disputes, and multigenerational transfers are becoming more common. Careful planning and legal oversight during transactions will be critical for families and businesses navigating these issues.
When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time outdoors—hiking, traveling Up North, and being with my wife, Nancy; our daughters, Melanie and Emma; and our golden retriever, Junie B. I also attend numerous community and business events and remain active in local organizations. I have served as Past Board Member and President of the Genesee County Bar Association, former Board Member of the Grand Blanc Chamber of Commerce, and former Board Member of the Genesee Landlords Association. Staying engaged in the community has helped me build relationships, support local initiatives, and stay connected to the people I serve.
Toast-worthy Real Estate Broker
Lida Athearn, Athearn Realty
115 Mill St., Fenton, MI | athearnrealty.com
Opening Athearn Realty wasn’t a long-held dream, but the right door opened at the right time. I’ve always believed that when something is meant for you, the path becomes clear. I loved every aspect of real estate, and eventually it simply made sense to step out on my own.
My vision was to build a brokerage rooted in relationships, community impact, and integrity. I also wanted a space where agents could grow both professionally and personally. Athearn Realty has been built 100% by referral, sustained by strong personal and business relationships.
I’ve been blessed with incredible mentors. My parents were my first examples of hard work and determination, both building businesses from the ground up. From them, I learned that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.
My faith in God has also guided every step of this journey. I believe He opens the right doors at the right time and gives me the courage and clarity to move forward. My husband has been one of my greatest supporters, and my four boys are my daily inspiration — the “why” behind everything I do.
As we head into the new year, sellers need to understand that this is no longer a market to “test” a high price. Overpricing will cost you. Homes must be priced correctly from day one to avoid losing momentum, buyers, and ultimately money. Buyers, meanwhile, have real opportunity: inventory is rising, rates are softening, and the market is becoming more balanced. It can still be competitive, but well-prepared clients on both sides are positioned for success.
Seeing our sign go up on the corner of Mill Street and Adelaide in Fenton was a full-circle moment, the day everything felt real and official.
In 2026, my goal is to deepen our impact through more community-centered events and meaningful connections. I want Athearn Realty to be known for showing up with resources, support, and heart for our clients. My mission is to build a legacy rooted in service, a brokerage that doesn’t just help families move, but helps them grow, thrive, and feel connected to the place they call home.
Here’s to you, Greater Flint’s ‘Ten to Toast’
The Greater Flint area is filled with remarkable, toast-worthy men and women whose dedication, work ethic, and passion help shape our community every single day. In this issue, My City Magazine was proud to celebrate some of these outstanding individuals and shine a light on the incredible talent thriving across our region.
We hope you enjoyed reading about how these successful professionals began their careers, what inspired them to take their first steps, and what continues to motivate them to grow, serve, and lead. Their stories highlight the many paths to success and remind us that dedication to one’s craft — paired with a genuine desire to uplift others — remains a powerful force within Greater Flint and Mid-Michigan.
This year’s featured honorees represent a wonderfully diverse group of industries and talents. We also spotlighted a signage consultant bringing visibility to local brands, a chiropractor deeply committed to wellness, a custom home builder crafting dream residences, an auto dealer known for integrity and service, an attorney advocating for clients’ rights, and a real estate broker helping families plant roots in our community.
What unites this group is more than their success. Each of them took valuable time out of their busy schedules to share their stories with us. They spoke openly about their beginnings, their challenges, and—most importantly—their ongoing commitment to the communities they serve. Their thoughtfulness, humility, and drive are inspiring, and we are grateful for the opportunity to highlight their accomplishments.

They start businesses, mentor youth, give back through volunteer work, support local causes, and help strengthen the roots of this region we all love.
And this, truly, is just the beginning.

And if you believe someone should be featured—or even feel you have a story worth sharing—we want to hear from you.
Together, we can continue to celebrate the spirit of Greater Flint: a community filled with talent, heart, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.
