Local resident Jennifer (Jenn) Horton is organizing the third annual TommyT Tribute, a fundraiser held in memory of her late brother, Thomas (Tom) Taylor Jr. Tom was 52 years old when he passed away on April 17, 2021. Though he was living in Tennessee at the time, he was originally from Hartland Township in Livingston County.

Tom had a lifelong love of music. As children, he and his sister Jenn would put on musical shows at home for their parents and friends.

He attended Michigan State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications. During his college years, his passion for music blossomed. He taught himself to play the guitar and began writing original songs, eventually forming a band with his dorm friends. His first band, The Front, played at venues around East Lansing. Tom’s dream was to share his original music. Eventually, he was invited to sign a contract with Warner Chappell Music, Inc., a major American music publishing company based in California, for his lyrics.

After a few years, Tom pursued a solo career and recorded two CDs alongside his artist friends. His music told vivid stories of life—conveying deep emotions of heartbreak, sorrow, pride, devotion, innocence, and enduring love.

In his memory, Tom’s family created the Thomas L. Taylor Jr. Memorial Music Scholarship Fund.

Our mission: To continue to support graduates through any post graduation careers, including college and vocational studies. On the application, Tom’s family included a question this past year: “How has God made an impact on your life?” Tom was a Christian and the responses were so amazing that Jenn said they will continue to include that question.
