Dressed in a variety of colorful and wacky costumes, approximately 275 volunteers gathered on frozen Lake Fenton, braving record-low temperatures to plunge into the icy water. The occasion was the fifth-annual Fenton Polar Plunge, which raked in approximately $56,000 for Special Olympics, well exceeding last year’s total of $38,000.
Divers with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department and an ambulance were on site to ensure the safety of all participants. Plungers dressed as super heroes and cowboys, while others wearing bikinis, tutus and wedding gowns were cheered on by hundreds of spectators. When they all stopped shivering, the courageous group enjoyed a Post-Plunge Party inside the Lodge, during which awards were presented by Pat Peters, Area Director of Special Olympics Area 13 and coordinator of the event.
