You Need a Break? Take One! August 15 is National Relaxation Day

This year, it’s been just one thing after another. It feels as if we’ve been relentlessly bombarded with tragedy, challenges, negativity and fear. Every exhalation is a sigh and every new headline a headache. Feeling overwhelmed? It’s okay to take a break from time to time. If you need to relax and unwind, then Saturday, August 15 is your day – because nothing comes before your inner peace on National Relaxation Day.

The day was founded in 1985 by fourth-grader, Sean Moeller. He believed that there should be a day when people do nothing of any real value, making a note that cleaning and real work are not part of relaxation. He was right. Too much work and worry can increase stress which can cause physical and mental ailments, as well as reduce our life expectancy.

So, let nothing bother you as you lazily float around the pool, read a new book, play a little music, or sit back with a cool drink and watch the clouds go by. Hide your phone, put away the computer, ignore the social media and just … be. Cancel everything you have to do, and do something you want to do, even if what you want to do is nothing at all.

Here are a few ideas for whiling the day away on August 15:

  • Read a book.
  • Compose a poem or write in a journal.
  • Go fishing.
  • Have a picnic.
  • Take a nap.
  • Go golfing.
  • Create or listen to music.
  • Just chill.

Whatever you choose to do, make it free of social media and negativity. Now, go out and do absolutely nothing … and have a great time doing it.
