Priority Children of Flint doesn’t want kids sitting around in front of the TV this summer! Thanks to the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, a whole lot of area youth will have fun things to do.
On May 1, the nonprofit organization hosted its first annual Summer Youth Expo at Flint’s Riverfront Banquet Center. Amy Krug, director of Priority Children, said the purpose of the free event is to help connect area young people, ranging in age from birth to 25, with organizations offering child-oriented programs, camps, services, job training and educational opportunities this summer. Several different organizations exhibited at the expo. “We’re trying to reach out to families to provide information about these really great programs that are already available,” Krug said. She added that many people in the area just aren’t aware of the very affordable summer programs that are out there.
Krug was very happy that the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation partnered with Priority Children to make the Summer Youth Expo possible. Hosted by Congressman Dan Kildee, the event included giveaways of many prizes aimed at fun family activities, including bowling passes, movie tickets and roller-skating passes. Approximately 700 people, including vendors, attended the expo. “For a first event, it was a great turnout!” exclaimed Michelle Shayna, office support at Priority Children.
Priority Children was born in the late 1980s out of the leadership of Mott Children’s Health Center as a broad-based community coalition that works to improve the situation for children.
