FLINT, MI – Mott Community College (MCC) Dental Hygiene Clinic has partnered with the Valley Area Agency for the Aging (VAAA) to provide free dental cleanings and check-ups for area senior citizens as part of the 226 DDF Brighter Futures Community Grant through the Delta Dental Foundation.

The Delta Dental Foundation is focused on ensuring children and adults in Michigan receive high-quality oral health education and high-quality dental care. Through its Brighter Futures initiative, Delta Dental is committed to improving people’s oral health and overall health and well-being through advocacy, education and philanthropy.

Funding through the Brighter Futures Community Grant is available for up to 60 patients. At this writing, the dental clinic has already served approximately 30 seniors.

VAAA provides action, advocacy, and answers on care for the elderly and disabled adults of Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee Counties, by enhancing lives, empowering choice, sustaining independence, and supporting caregivers and families. VAAA received the $1,500 grant to cover the costs of cleaning and check-ups for senior patients who schedule their cleanings with the MCC Dental Hygiene Clinic. The Dental Hygiene Clinic, located on the second floor of the Mott Memorial Building, offers low cost services rendered by Dental Hygiene Students under the supervision of licensed Dentists and Dental Hygienists. The clinic offers state-of-the-art equipment including high-tech digital radiography, computerized charting, and intra-oral cameras.

Seniors who qualify for the Comprehensive Dental Hygiene Care through VAAA will be provided this care free of charge. Care includes an extra- and intra-oral exam, cleaning and polishing, periodontal debridement, fluoride treatment, nutritional assessment, periodontal evaluation, patient education and dental charting.

“We’re excited to be able to partner with the VAAA to give senior citizens access to free dental cleanings and check-ups,” said Tara Spencer, Coordinator of the Dental Hygiene program at MCC.
