On March 9, 2017, kids and parents will gather for a free family dinner where they will have the chance to learn more about healthy eating. The event will run from 4:15pm to 6:30pm at Cummings Elementary School at 2200 Walton Ave. in Flint.
Families of Great Expectations Early Childhood Program at Cummings, which is an extension of the University of Michigan-Flint’s nationally-accredited Early Childhood Development Center, will participate in the event.
Among the things parents will learn about are different foods that help mitigate the effects of lead in the body. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha from Hurley Medical Center, the doctor who brought Flint’s lead water problems to the public, will speak at the event.
In addition to healthy eating, families will have the chance to take part in vision screenings, yoga, immunizations, and other activities. Prizes will also be handed out.
The Eat the Alphabet! event is the latest in a series of events led by UM-Flint and community partners to help educate Flint families about health. Since Great Expectations opened in 2016, it has offered its service to more than 200 students.
