“From the Publisher” – January 2016

0

Welcome to 2016! I hope the New Year brings you good health, prosperity and happiness.

In November, we will choose new leadership for our country; last November, Flint residents chose a new leader for their city – Flint’s first woman mayor, Karen Weaver. The Mayor was gracious enough to sit down with MCM Staff Writer, Cheryl Dennison, for an “up close and personal” interview. I think you’ll find it interesting.

Always interesting are the “My Day” features – this month, we spent time with local veterinarian, Dr. Joe Hendricks. He is not only a lover of animals, but also his community, and gives generously of his time and talent. I was also interested to learn about a program called FAME that is helping area men better handle the challenging job of being a father. Check it out in our “My Outreach” piece by Lisa Briggs.

On the lighter side, the “My Success” subject is Rob Paulsen, a multi-award-winning voice actor and Grand Blanc High School grad with some nice things to say about his hometown. And, our “Eats” feature is Market Deli – a new Farmers’ Market venture of Mark Hoffman, who set up shop in the space formerly occupied by Thompson Creek Turkey Farm to offer fresh turkey products and all natural deli meats. I’ll take a turkey burger!

I bet you didn’t know that Flint has an amazing swim team! Some members of the Flint Falcons are coming close to Olympic Trial qualifying standards. Check out Mark Spezia’s story. And if you like being out in the cold, take a look at our “My Fun” piece about Peabody Ice Climbing – yes, you can climb a giant tower of ice in Fenton! I’m definitely going to give it a try.

No issue of MCM is complete without a look back – we not only have “My History” and “My Flashback” pieces, but also a review of some reader-favorite stories from 2015 in our “Look Back” on p. 22. I forget how much amazing content we pack into each issue. And, our photographers were out and about snapping city-zens at several recent “Haps”.

If you’re a subscriber, I’m sure you noticed the Wellness magazine that came with your My City this month. I invite you to grab a hot beverage, get cozy and spend some time with both of our quality publications. And be sure to let us know if there’s something you’d like to see in My City.

Let’s make this a great year … carpe diem!

Thanks for reading,
