“From the Publisher” – April 2015

Dear Readers,

In this issue, we’re celebrating the great things the season brings with our annual Home & Garden section and as you can see from our cover, we’re thinking about baseball, too! We caught up with Flint native Jim Abbott to talk about his life as one of the world’s most distinguished athletes, and how he’s still inspiring others to “Believe in the Possibilities”.

Our “My Day” series continues with UM-Flint Chancellor, Dr. Susan Borrego, who was gracious enough to let us into her life for a chat and a glimpse of her role there. I’ve spent a little time with Sue at community events and I think she brings exceptional leadership to her position. U of M-Flint has a big role in the city’s growth, and Flint’s future is dependent on the success of higher education that includes UM-Flint and the other fine institutions here. I welcome Dr. Borrego and look forward to attending her inauguration on April 17.

Loyal MCM readers have commented on the “My Success” features – our team has fun connecting with famous people who got their start right here, like multi-media artist and “photographer to the stars,” Eric Ogden. Like most of you, I wasn’t aware that he was born and raised in Flint, but it seems that these stories keep finding us. Eric took time to talk to MCM about his youth in Flint and what he’s up to now, and also sent us some great examples of his work.

Also on the spectrum of celebrated local talent is Christopher Paul Curtis, a Flint native and author whose award-winning book Bud, Not Buddy was recently brought to life by the FYT. He granted us an interview during a recent visit to his hometown and opened up about his work and his life. It’s great reading!

Did you attend one of the many recent fundraisers and community events around town? If so, be sure to flip through our “My Haps” section. There are so many great happenings scheduled for this spring – get involved and look for coverage of all the excitement in your monthly MCM.

Along with all of the fun things in this issue, we also approach a serious subject. My City staff writer Christy Capelin reached out to members of the local Muslim community to discuss the misconceptions about their beliefs. If you are in touch with world events, you may find it easy – as I do – to find yourself confused and disturbed by what you read, see and hear. But do you realize that the Muslim community includes your neighbors, doctors, fellow students and friends? We appreciate the willingness of all the subjects presented in “Islam Redefined,” and I know you’ll be enlightened by their perspectives.

We get so many comments on the diversity of the content we have in every issue. Look for even more variety as we introduce additional contributing and guest writers in the months to come.

Happy Spring!
