On a beautiful fall day, dozens of community members gathered at Mott Community College to celebrate the area’s native peoples and Hispanic Heritage Month. The program included rededication of the Peace & Dignity Tree and the People of the Four Colors ceremony with dancing and drumming. The ritual honors people of all colors (red, yellow, black and white) and requires four people to represent each color. This year’s representatives were Anupa Shantaram (East/Yellow), Robert McAllister (South/Black), Aurora Saucedo (West/Red) and Michael J. Thorp (North/White). The event is designed to promote cultural and racial harmony.
