Hurley Food FARMacy Expanding to Help More People

0
The Michigan Health Endowment Fund has awarded Hurley Medical Center an $85,800 grant to expand the Food FARMacy and address food insecurity in Genesee County.
Since launching the Food FARMacy last in August 2017, Hurley has provided immediate food assistance to over 700 people.
Last November, Hurley launched a process for our primary care clinics, which focus on children and older adults, to offer screenings and referrals for food assistance. Between 35-53% of the patients are food insecure. In an effort to provide healthy food to more patients, this grant will now allow Hurley to offer food insecurity screenings and referrals with community partners at:
  • Hamilton Community Health Network
  • Genesee Community Health Center
  • Mott Children’s Health Center
  • Genesys Downtown Flint Health Center, Family Health Center and Genesys Regional  Medical Center Inpatient Oncology Unit
  • Wellness Services, Inc.
Hurley will also offer take-home food bags to allow patients to get food immediately upon referral, so that there is no gap in time before they fill their healthy food prescriptions.
The Food FARMacy program was born out of our mission of “Clinical Excellence. Service to People.”
