Fashion Event Aims to Inspire the Community

Fashion WeekThe 4th Annual Vehicle City Fashion Week has included a Creative Meetup, a Workshop and a Fashion & Style Brunch, and will culminate in a Runway & Trunk Show on Friday, November 20. This year, the show has moved to an all new location: Signature Chophouse in Flushing. For $30 ($40 VIP), guests can enjoy a remarkable runway fashion show, a red-carpet pre-party, a gift bag and tasty food. The event will be hosted by celebrity stylist, GooGoo Atkins.

The event features artists and designers from all over, with a special focus on Michigan designers. VCFW was founded by Kala Wilburn, designer and owner of Fannie Lucille. Kala started VCFW to help find a way to combat violence through fashion exposure. According to Kala, Fashion Against Violence is the underlying purpose of the whole week. “It is important to bring awareness that we are a community that does not tolerate violence,” Kala says. “Violence does not just affect one person, but rather the whole family or community,” she continues. It is important to emphasize the deeper meaning behind Vehicle City Fashion Week.

Kala also uses the event to help aspiring individuals who might not know the next step, and to push them to go farther. The event gives Michigan artists and businesses a platform to showcase their talent. Their mission is simple: “to promote designers and artists who thirst for opportunities in hopes to educate the community through exposure to fashion industry development within Genesee County.” VCFW is a great avenue to gain knowledge and opportunity while supporting others. “If members of the community continue to support one another, then all can prosper,” Kala emphasizes. “Dreams are meant to be reached and achieved. They are not supposed to become stagnant.”

Proceeds from the show are used to provide scholarships for students attending school for fashion, art, or music.
