BROWSING:  Hobby

Back in 1968, when they were newlyweds, Dan and Ann Graham decided to join a club together; but it wasn’t books or bowling. This dog-loving couple chose the Companion Dog Training Club of Flint, and have been members ever since.

There are those who create miniature Christmas Villages … and then there are Lynn and Kathy Hopper, whose miniature Christmas Village has been in the Hopper family for over 100 years. Lynn’s grandmother started the collection with miniature ice skaters that were made in Germany. When the collection was passed on to Lynn’s mother, it consisted of six houses and a church. “We would go to toy stores to find little figurines to add to it,” Kathy recalls.

Haven’t we all enjoyed searching for treasure at one time or another? The thrill of knowing “something” is there, waiting … and the building anticipation before finally setting eyes on it? This sensation certainly occurs with finding your keys in between couch cushions, or a lost cell phone in a grassy lawn; but what about going back to a time when people would search for treasure? Have we lost the spirit of exploration?

Flyball is great family entertainment and fun – just ask Cindy McLean, UAW Benefit Coordinator for General Motors, who has competed in tournaments with her team of dogs for 32 years. During competition, teams of four dogs race against each other and must jump over four hurdles, speeding toward a box that spring-releases a tennis ball. The dog must press a spring-loaded pad, catch the tennis ball and bring it back to its handler. According to Cindy, any dog can play flyball, but high-energy breeds such as border collies and whippets seem to excel in the sport.

GLSC is Michigan’s largest dance club, with approximately 300 members representing a cross-section of the community spanning all walks of life. Men, women, college students, forty-somethings, retirees, singles and married couples come from all over, some from as far away as Sarnia, Canada to join in on the fun. The group meets every Wednesday at the Flushing Roll Haven Center for a one-hour group lesson taught by a professional instructor followed by an open dance with a deejay spinning continuous music throughout the evening. A different dance is taught each month, such as the waltz, country, ballroom and swing, among many others. Leo and Marge enjoyed their first evening at the club so much they decided to join, and have been members for the last six years. “We do a little bit of everything, but the West Coast Swing is my favorite,” says Leo.

Peering into the kettle with a practiced eye, Cory Fernelius appraises the mixture of water and grains boiling inside. With hands that once worked his family’s farm, the 29-year-old Fenton resident expertly adds more hops to the concoction. Now near the end of the process, he seeks to transfer the liquid containing sugars and grain mash – known as wort – into a fermentation vessel to cool as quickly as possible. Pitching yeast into the mix is the last step; from here, it’s all about remaining patient during the final phase of brewing his beer…
