Prince would be so proud!

The late pop superstar would surely have been a fan of the vibrant shade of purple that is adding a dramatic pop to everything from sofas to stilettos. Created from a brilliant blend of red undertones and deep indigo, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future,” according to the powers that be at the Pantone® Color Institute®.

Headquartered in Carlstadt, NJ, Pantone Inc. is best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS), which is widely used in a variety of industries, primarily printing, as well as the manufacture of plastics, colored paint, and fabric.

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” explains Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.

This vivid shade of purple has been linked with things mystical and spiritual. Often associated with mindfulness practices, it is chosen as the color to decorate gathering places and meditation spaces for its ability to generate energy. Shades of Ultra Violet were often worn by musical icons Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix – three artists known for expressing their creative imaginations. (“Purple Haze,” anyone?)

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, elaborates. “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
