“From the Publisher” – July 2016

Dear Readers,

Producing this top-notch, monthly mag is a real labor of love – we work hard to fill these pages with engaging content that excites, inspires and surprises; makes us proud to be members of the Greater Flint community. Our team is so talented and dedicated – the kudos keep rolling in, and we truly appreciate it!

We’ve been happy to do great stories about our local universities; there is so much going on in this College Town! Be sure to read the piece on UM-Flint’s fantastic group of international students. These young people, and the UM-Flint faculty, really get it. They are certainly adding to the multi-cultural fabric of the city.

Speaking of UM-Flint, we’re happy to have a new column “My Econ,” written by Dr. Christopher Douglas, Associate Professor and Chair of the UM-Flint Department of Economics. Check out his first piece. And, we’ve been joined by another new contributor: an accomplished author known by most of you … he was voted Best Local Columnist in our 2016 City’s Choice Awards: Andrew Heller. We welcome both gentlemen to the growing list!

With the new things, we also have all our reader faves like “My Eats” – this month featuring local eateries and providers of organic food; it’s out there, people! Check out “Organic Flint”. Mark Spezia did a great “My Sport” story about local star, Geena Gall, who’s still chasing her goals. And, I think our “Outreach” piece will inspire you.

Golf season is in full swing in Greater Flint; we sent Cheryl Dennison (who loves to golf) out to spend time with Warwick Hills head golf pro, Doug Brody, for our “My Day” feature. Talk about a dream job! (Sorry about all those cancelled appointments, my friend.)

Of course, life’s not all about the fun stuff, and we try to find a balance. Allison Rosbury’s “My Giving” piece is about a great, local kid – Luke Duncanson – whose tragic suicide is making a lasting impact on other teens. Read how his family is honoring his memory.

Memories are so important to all of us; we particularly enjoy offering our “Flashback” features – it’s great to get input from readers! This month, we asked for Facebook comments on the “Flint Block” (Rock) and were overwhelmed by your memories. So, we decided to create our own for the cover. Thanks to artist Charles A. Boike for making our vision a very cool reality, even if only for a few days. Eric Dutro got great photos of the multi-hour process; check those out.

Lots of faces in the mag this month, as always … did MCM snap you at one of the many recent “Haps?” We’re ready to cover all the great events coming up – hope to see you there!

Thanks for reading,
