Free Lung Screening Saturday, November 23 at Ascension Genesys

November is lung cancer awareness month and Ascension Genesys is offering a free low dose CT screening of the lungs for those at risk. The event will be held next Saturday, November 23 from 10am-2pm at the Ascension Genesys Ambulatory Imaging Center, 600 Health Park Blvd., Suite B (lower level), in Grand Blanc.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women over age 55, according to the American Lung Association. Symptoms of lung cancer are persistent cough, Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, hoarseness, unexplained loss of appetite or weight, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, feeling weak or recurring infections. Most cases of lung cancer occur with no symptoms at all. It is important to get regular screenings if you are over the age of 55 or at risk. If detected early, over 80% of lung cancer deaths could be prevented.

A low dose computerized tomography scan (CT) of the chest is one of the simplest screening exams. It’s quick, completely painless and results in minimal radiation exposure. The images produced all providers to see any abnormalities within the lungs before symptoms.

Individuals eligible for the CT lung screenings must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 55-77
  • Currently be a smoker or have quit within 15 years
  • Have, at minimum, a 30+ pack year smoking history.
