The Original Durant-Dort Carriage Co. Factory

afterthought

This month we wrapped up our History Series on the two Flint business partners, W.C. “Billy” Durant and J. Dallas Dort, who changed their city and the nation with their eponymous carriage company. Pictured here are workers assembling carriage wheels inside of the original Durant-Dort Carriage Co. factory. Commonly considered the birthplace of General Motors, Factory One was recently purchased by GM. Parts of the building date back to the late 19th century when it was owned by the Flint Cotton & Woolen Mills, and the factory is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
