“From the Publisher” Sping 2017 Wellness

Dear Readers,

Happy Spring!

The season turns our thoughts to “spring cleaning” for both the home and the body – a fresh start. There’s an abundance of health topics to cover – as always, you’ll find something of interest in this issue of Wellness.

We’re proud to present another “Inside the O.R.” feature profiling procedures performed by Bishr Al Dabagh, MD, FAAD and Marc Silver, MD. Thanks to the facility management staffs who graciously allowed My City to observe these gifted surgeons at work. I feel fortunate to have seen so many amazing procedures for this continuing series. Watching the Coronary Artery Bypass performed by Dr. Silver, one of country’s finest heart surgeons, was a highlight of my life!

My City Wellness has truly broken ground in highlighting the Greater Flint medical community in exciting ways. Featured in a “My Day” piece is Michael Danic, DO, Chair of the Anesthesiology Department at Genesys – he was instrumental in making things happen for this issue. I must note that these physicians were all quick to acknowledge the talent of the teams they work with every day.

Be sure to read the “My Success” profile of a leading dental professional, Tracy Dantzler, DDS. She is president of the Genesee District Dental Society, and opened up to MCW for a very inspiring profile.

Our team enjoys presenting articles with a local focus, combined with informative current health topics of interest. While Genesys Heart Institute is leading cardiac surgery with the dissolvable stent, the University of Michigan is at the forefront of stem cell research. On the other end of the spectrum but no less impactful, are the compassionate and dedicated people who volunteer their time to help those facing life’s final chapter. Read “Volunteers for Hospice: Hearts of Gold”. And, Dr. Partha Nandi gives us the bottom line on “The 3 Biggest Fears About Colonoscopy.” Our regular contributors, including local physicians, a U of M-Flint professor and the chief medical executive at the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, provide excellent and diverse articles, as well.

Top-of-mind for our entire country is the subject of addiction. Genesee Health System provided statistics for Genesee County that may shock you, and a local substance abuse counselor tells his personal story. We also have info from the National Cancer Institute about research of marijuana for medical use.

Ongoing research is thriving locally, and the community always turns out to support it. Recent events were held to benefit Hurley Medical Center and McLaren Health System and their continued efforts to improve the health of Greater Flint residents. My City was there – check out photos from recent “Happenings”.

A multitude of local initiatives and programs are available to get you on track for better health this spring! On that note, enjoy this issue of Wellness!
