Hurley Foundation is excited to announce a partnership with the Schummer family of Grand Blanc and #McKennasSquad. Together, they have introduced the McKenna Beauty Bar Box – a box filled with make-up and hygiene products and given to newly diagnosed and procedural patients fighting special battles. The McKenna Beauty Bar Box was unveiled at a press conference held on January 18 at Hurley Foundation – School of Nursing.

McKenna Schummer’s story is filled with courage, strength and beauty. Throughout her 19-month fight and some dark and trying times battling Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, 11-year-old McKenna Schummer found a passion for spreading cheer to other patients through her love of make-up. She always envisioned a Beauty Bar that would allow other kids to feel better while receiving treatments. Sadly, McKenna lost her battle with cancer, but her infectious smile and positive attitude that have inspired so many continues to live on through the #McKennasSquad, a group comprised of family, friends and community supporters.

In her honor, the Squad made McKenna’s dream a reality when it opened the McKenna Beauty Bar at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in June of 2018. McKenna’s Squad has expanded her legacy by partnering with Hurley Foundation to honor McKenna and provide a needed lift to young patients. The McKenna Beauty Box will be offered to patients selected by Child Life & Outpatient services as they complete their visit at Hurley.
