Throughout 2016, many local organizations, programs and events celebrated milestone anniversaries. My City congratulates all these fantastic groups for their contributions to enriching the Greater Flint community.
Applewood Estate – 100th | This May, Applewood Estate opened its doors for public tours of both the grounds and inside the home where Flint’s famous Mott family once lived. Now, it’s a place where special memories can be made by anyone who visits. |

Bikes on the Bricks – 10th | In September, this Downtown favorite celebrated ten years of end-of-summer fun. And with over 15,000 bikes on those famous bricks, the approximately 30,000 attendees were not disappointed! |
Black Classical Origins Gala – 10th* | Thirteen years ago, Richard King accepted a challenge from then chairman of the Flint Institute of Music, Dallas Dort, to think of ways for the Flint Symphony Orchestra to reach out to Flint’s black middle class residents. Lennetta Coney soon joined the steering committee for what was then called, “The Black Classical Music Family Festival.” |
Crim Festival of Races – 40th | The HealthPlus Crim Festival of Races brings thousands of runners, walkers and spectators to the bricks on Saginaw Street for Flint’s premier event. |
Crossover Downtown Outreach Ministry – 25th | A faith-based, interdenominational mission, this ministry was established to provide free emergency food, clothing, household and personal items, and youth programs to those most in need in the community. |
Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad – 40th** | This past summer, the popular tourist attraction celebrated 40 years of family fun. And although many of the buildings and components of the two are quite old, they commemorated the day back in 1976 when these historical pieces were presented to the residents of Genesee County. |
Flint Public Library – 165th | In 1851, a group of society ladies felt that there was a need for books and literacy for not only themselves, but also the people of an emerging Flint. Today, the venerable resource facility continues to build on its role in the community. |
Flint School of the Performing Arts – 60th* | |
Flint Symphony Orchestra – 100th*** | The 2016-2017 Classical Concert season is one of celebration for the FSO, as the cultural icon celebrates 100 years of history and music in the community. |
Genesee Health Plan – 15th | |
Humane Society of Genesee County – 90th* | On January 8, the organization marked this occasion with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Burton Chamber of Commerce, accompanied by the essentials for any party: punch and cake. |
Charles Stewart Mott Foundation – 90th | In 1926, C.S. Mott responded to the increasing needs of Flint’s growing population. MCM sat down with Bill and Ridgway White to discuss their thoughts on 90 years of giving. |
Rotary Club – 100th | |
Sloan Museum – 50th | |
University of Michigan Flint – 60th | UM-Flint celebrated on the Flat Lot in Downtown Flint with a marching band, fireworks, a spectacular laser light show and of course – cake! |
