“From the Publisher” – August 2016

Dear Readers,

I want to start by saying that I consider my use of this page in MCM as a privilege – an opportunity to express not only my pride in the quality of this publication and the talent of my team, but also my constant pride in its content. So many great stories to tell – and we’re not making them up … this is pure Flint, people!

And again, there are too many things in this issue to mention in this little “space” of mine. We get to know Mott Community College President Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, and Crossroads Village Manager, Denise Bowles – both so passionate about their very different jobs. In the “My Success” spot is notable local businessman and philanthropist, Diplomat Pharmacy CEO, Phil Hagerman – he’s doing so much for Flint. And, the “My Dream” piece features my friend, Lance Lamson, and his amazing concept car, The Velox. Great stories for different reasons, all with local flavor and significance. We’re proud to share them with you.

Check out the Flint Youth Media Project (“My Arts”), our piece on the Curiosity Academy, Part 1 of our “Entrepreneur Town” series, and the “My Passion” profile of the innovative Stemletics program – all exciting things happening here in Flint. And while this might sound like a full variety of content, that’s just the beginning!

Of course, we’re all getting ready to celebrate an exciting month for Downtown events. For “My Tech,” we talked with an organizer of Hot Rod High – they will be a part of Back to the Bricks – about their goal to preserve Flint’s automotive heritage. And when it comes to world class Flint events, the Crim tops the list; so, we caught up with Bobby Crim himself to chat about what it means to him as he prepares to run (at 84) this year.

When it comes to running, I think many of us would just rather drink wine! Our “My Fun” piece – “Greater Flint: Uncorked!” – profiles some fantastic local wineries we visited. And just like it says on our cover, you’ll also find stories in this issue on giving, outreach and history: the Flint Public Library is celebrating 165 years!

Finally, the “My Haps” section is HUGE … I’ll bet we snapped you at one of the many recent Greater Flint events. MCM was there.

On that note, I want to encourage you to make August the month you spend time enjoying all the fun, great food and entertainment Flint has to offer. Be a part of what makes your city so special!

Thanks for reading.
