Tonight, starts the run of “Memphis: The Musical” at the New McCree Theatre. The show is loosely based upon real life Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music for a radio audience in the 1950s.

The musical tells the fictional story of Huey Calhoun, a white stock boy at a local department store and his relationship with Felicia – a talented black singer he meets in an underground club. He promises to get her on the radio and they both become stars as he works to make good. Both Felicia and Huey deal with the prejudice of the times especially as their relationship becomes something more.

The musical is by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro and originally ran on Broadway from 2009-2012. The show won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 2010. Memphis the Musical is full of great times, smooth moves and over 20 original musical numbers. It’s not a show to miss.
