“From the Publisher” – February 2016

Dear Readers,

So, winter finally showed up! I would imagine that’s good news for outdoor enthusiasts, snow-plowers, and for Bishop International Airport – with folks in Greater Flint looking to fly away and escape. On our cover is BIA Director, Craig Williams, who chatted with us about his first year at the helm of the first-class facility.

It’s Black History Month, and we’re happy to celebrate with features on the Genesee District Library’s Award of Excellence Honorees, and the Black Classical Origins Gala – Allison Rosbury spoke with Flint Institute of Music Board Members Richard King and Lennetta Coney about this Flint music tradition. There are many exciting local celebrations – check out our “Can’t Miss List” and visit mycitymag.com for details.

A recent celebration marked the 90th anniversary of the Humane Society of Genesee County – there are so many good people dedicated to that organization. We’re definitely animal lovers here at MCM (we have the most spoiled “Office Pup” in town), so we enjoyed doing the story on the Flint Police Department’s newest K-9 Team.

One person who’s certainly happy about finally getting a little snowfall is our “My Sport” subject: Fenton skier, Zoe Weinberg. She’s carving a big name for herself in high school sports and has a bright future ahead (p.54). We’ve also got our popular Eats, Arts, Music and History features, a “My Day” piece on longtime CARS 108 radio personality, George McIntyre – and so much more.

Under the “My Fun” header is a short piece on the recent re-opening of the UM-Flint skating rink Downtown. It’s certainly a welcome sight! There’s been lots of fun going on around the area, as evidenced by our huge “My Haps” section – starting on with two Flint New Year’s Eve celebrations. We’re also introducing a fun feature this month: “My Style,” written by Donyale Walton. She’ll be covering fashion with a local flavor, and her first offering is a “Valentine’s Day Date Night” piece that we photographed Downtown at Cork on Saginaw. Thanks to Marge Murphy, who opened her doors just for us!

Finally, and also in honor of Valentine’s Day, be sure to read “My Love Story”. Cheryl Dennison sat down with Steve and Rosanne Heddy, longtime friends of mine and many others who admire them for their outstanding charitable efforts in support of Flint. Such a great story!

Great stories are what My City is all about. If you’re not yet a subscriber, we’ve got a great deal: 12 issues for only $12 (save $75), which includes our Wellness issues.

Next month, we will present our annual bridal issue – and mark your calendars … the Sloan Longway-My City-Bridal Event is on March 19!

Thanks for reading,
